The initial version of AutoCAD was released in 1982, but the modern version was released in 1984. The first release was accompanied by a price tag of $27,000 for the base software and $100,000 for a suite of reference manuals, and AutoCAD was thus very expensive to license. Over the next several years, AutoCAD version 2 was released at $25,000 (a very expensive license then), and this was reduced to $15,000 in 1986. As of 2014, a base version of AutoCAD costs less than $700, and a suite of AutoCAD design software (including technical support and student versions) costs about $500.

AutoCAD is an excellent design tool. It has been adopted by architects, engineers, drafters, illustrators, model builders, military planners, politicians, journalists, and many other professionals. Though often referred to as a “CAD application”, AutoCAD’s purpose is design, not construction.

AutoCAD was designed by Frank M. Carpenter and developed by the firm that bears his name. A seasoned draftsman, Carpenter co-authored the first widely used business software manual, the 1981 Second Edition of the Business Writing Manual, which is still widely used.

AutoCAD became popular in the 1980s, when other CAD programs were expensive, as they had not yet been ported to microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. For this reason, in the 1980s the price of CAD programs was much higher than it is today. With AutoCAD, Carpenter was able to greatly simplify drafting by representing the objects being designed with splines instead of lines, and by using a “snap” feature to ensure the edges of two adjacent objects line up to form smooth surfaces.

AutoCAD was originally developed as a “universal” CAD program, intended to be used by all types of designers, from hobbyists to architects and engineers. Early drafts of AutoCAD were created with the intention of being used with PC-based graphics terminals. Before these terminals became popular, drafts were usually created on large plotters. Early versions of AutoCAD required the user to spend a long time drawing lines and annotating them in order to calculate features such as area, volume, or length. The intent was that the program would be used with a “clipboard” to copy the current drawing, and after a few hours of annotation, the user would have a completed drawing ready to be printed

v2 of AutoCAD, released in 1996, was the first version to use a floating-point drawing coordinate system (previously it was based on user-defined user units, used in previous versions). It also contained a number of new features, including the ability to create parametric blocks, and to automatically create block views at edit time (called Block View Automation).

AutoCAD v3 was released in 1999, and included a number of new features and enhancements, such as:

An extra coordinate system, a “background” (plot) coordinate system that does not need to be selected or changed (previously it was always active)
A new multi-sheet plotter mode
Ability to set reference point colors
A new draw layer manager, which allows layers to be deleted when no drawing is selected
A new DXF viewer and editor
Support for ECW (Encapsulated PostScript)
Enhanced templates, including improved parametric drawing functionality, text and dimensions, and support for naming objects

AutoCAD v3 was the first version to support xRef files, or external references. This ability was used to allow the insertion of external references, which can be used to speed up modeling and file editing. AutoCAD v3 also includes capabilities for creating and exporting animation (AVI) and voice recordings (WAV).

As of AutoCAD 2013, only the concurrent drawing mode is in v3. This is a method of editing one drawing (typically the model) while viewing another (typically the drawing that was used to create the model). The other methods of editing, such as the secondary drawing mode, have been discontinued in favour of this new feature.

AutoCAD 2013 also includes a visual programming language called Visual LISP. A VBA equivalent, Visual Basic for Applications was released in 2015. Visual LISP and Visual Basic for Applications are aimed to provide similar functionality to code as the traditional LISP language. Visual LISP and Visual Basic for Applications enable users to control a DYNO engine and its features at a code level (through more than 2000 commands) from within the same software.

As of AutoCAD 2013, AutoCAD is distributed in four languages: English, French, German and Spanish.

AutoCAD 2013 has been available since AutoCAD 2012. It is compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac
