Elden Ring is actually a pretty interesting game, which more than makes up for the fact that it’s in Early Access and that it’s functionally still a beta. The presentation is the real achievement, though. A sharp blend of pixel art and interesting writing transform a by-the-book fantasy RPG into a beautiful and evocative experience. We’ve seen some wonderful JRPG visual style over the years, but this manages to be both stylistically satisfying and critically mind-expanding.

Elden Ring is the sort of game that looks good out of the box but gets even better when you begin to poke around. The crafting and magic system are a lot of fun, and the story is well-written enough that you can tell a compelling tale even when you’re not all that invested in the characters. The leveling system, equipment, and combat are more issues than they are issues, but they’re simple enough to pick up that this could be a good place to start for fantasy fans who want to try out the genre. It’s not bad, but there are better choices out there right now if you’re looking to start your adventure in a fantasy world.

I’ll admit, before diving into Elden Ring, I was skeptical of JRPGs, and primarily avoided them during my 12+ years of PC gaming. But Elden Ring may give new life to that genre. The genre’s roots lie in turn-based, grid-based strategy, and Elden Ring plays much like a streamlined, action-oriented strategy game. Though the action pieces are made simpler, they’re still complex enough to challenge and teach.
