(Phys.org) —We all know that high altitude – and specifically high altitude mountains – can cause hikers to experience altitude sickness. But some people still don’t understand how to prevent it or get to a safe level when experiencing symptoms. As part of a new effort to educate, the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. has produced a new animated video that illustrates exactly what altitude sickness is and how it develops, with potential causes and preventive measures.
“The effects of altitude on your health are complex,” says Dave Scholl, an atmospheric scientist at NCAR and the lead author of the video. “They are a bit like a game of whack-a-mole, where if you can identify the problem and prevent one health hazard, you’ve solved altitude sickness.”
Altitude sickness is a fairly common and very serious condition caused by the reduced oxygen available in the body at altitude. The higher you go, the more altitude you’ve reached, and the higher the level of oxygen in the air. The limit to the amount of oxygen that can be carried in the body is called the “respiratory compensation threshold.” For most people, the threshold is about 5,500 feet, and symptoms of altitude sickness generally appear within a few hours or days of reaching that altitude. Symptoms may include fatigue, headache, nausea, and a lack of coordination.
If you are planning on hiking in a high-elevation area, you need to avoid exposure to extreme altitude for several hours and perhaps days beforehand. However, if you’re just passing through and it’s not an issue for you, you can still suffer from altitude sickness if you climb too high. Because of the complications that can result from altitude sickness, there are some people who simply decide to avoid it altogether. That’s the approach taken by Sherpas, the climbing guides who navigate the Everest expeditions.
