Empire Earth (1986) is a science fiction space flight sim game (semi-commercial). In it, the player has eight playable characters, each with a different role in an interstellar crisis. Each player can “upgrade” one of the other characters and their abilities, making them stronger and giving the player more options for different situations.

In Empire Earth, players take the role of a character trying to evacuate a planet from another star. The characters can specialize in certain areas of a planet that they can travel and explore, such as a spa, ore mine, or research station. They can also improve their abilities by picking upgrades as the game progresses.

The game is set in the 26th century, using the fictional Galaxy Map, where players are fighting against alien invaders. Multiplayer support was released by Revolution Software in late 1993 and received rave reviews. The game was ported to the Amiga, Atari ST, DOS, Mac OS and other systems. The PCs port was also originally released for Windows and Mac in 1991, and the DOS and Amiga versions in 1993. Both Revo and Sierra’s ports were later re-released as part of various Empire Earth Collector’s Editions.

Empire Earth runs on a graphics mode called CGA, similar to the Atari 8-bit machines of the time. The original game only supports 8-color video modes, with a palette of 256 colors. The CGA mode on the Macintosh simply translated each palette index to the corresponding index of the Macintosh color space (primarily Red, Green, and Blue) for each palette entry, rather than accessing and manipulating the actual CGA palette; as a result, the colors on the Macintosh version of the game are slightly lighter than the corresponding colors in the DOS version.
