While you’re creating an image, the process is said to be in production or in rendering. Other than making changes in the White Balance, Exposure, or Color sliders, all you’re actually doing is layering one Filter onto another in the Filter Gallery. The more you filter, the more you speed up the rendering process because Photoshop must build each layer separately.

## The History Palette

The History palette (Figure 2-11) shows you all the layers that are currently active in the image. You can use this to correct mistakes and to return to previous editing steps for reference later. The History palette is located on the left side of the screen in the Layers panel. Note the arrow at the top of the palette with a pointing finger icon next to it; that’s how you tell the History palette to display its list of layers.
