It is common to record digital video signals in digital form as a video signal recording and playback apparatus. Examples of such apparatus are disclosed in U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,574,490; 4,628,971 and 4,761,684.
As disclosed in the first of these patents, digitized analog video signals are recorded on a magnetic tape at a predetermined data rate of, for example, 2.6 Mbytes/second and recorded audio signals, as exemplified by a standard analog audio signal are also recorded at the predetermined data rate.
When such a signal, containing digital video and audio data as well as control data, is played back, the system first synchronizes the data signal to the audio signal, in accordance with the control data, then regenerates the digital video data and reproduces the analog video signal therefrom.
As described in greater detail in the aforementioned U.S. Pat. No. 4,719,551, one of the problems experienced in such an apparatus in which the analog video signal is recorded as a continuous signal on the tape is that, as the tape runs out, errors in the recorded signal which are caused by the progressively approaching end of the tape become progressively more serious. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the audio data and control data are generally more critical to the system and, thus, are recorded on the tape at a much higher data rate than the video data and, thus, tend to consume a greater portion of the tape.
This problem is due, in part, to the fact that, as noted above, as the tape runs out, the tape speed increases and, thus, the rate at which data is recorded on the tape decreases. Therefore, the data recording rate and, consequently, the data rate of the video signal, which is generated from the digitally encoded video data, will decrease as the tape runs out.
